Are You Cut Out to Work From Home?

By - Ronda Tuckness

Do you ever wonder whether you are cut out to work from home? I ask this question because not everyone is. Some people need the camaraderie that co-workers provide. They need to socialize on a regular basis and do not enjoy being alone.

This is a question that you must ask yourself before you consider working from home. You will be making a big mistake if you give up the corporate world without first realizing that you may miss the daily human contact.

For some reason, this is something that many people fail to consider before making the switch to working from home. They may take many other things into consideration, such as the luxury of being their own boss, no morning commute, not having to ask for vacation time, etc.

Of course, you can still communicate with the outside world through email and the telephone. You can even take a break and go shopping in order to be with other people. The fact is though, that a normal office provides a lot of socialization that you will never get elsewhere.

You walk into your office each morning, greet your co-workers, take breaks with them, share your personal life with them, eat lunch with them; you know the routine. For me, even though I enjoy this to a degree, I would still love the freedom that working from my own home would provide.

I would be able to find other avenues in which to socialize that would fill that gap. In fact, I would certainly not miss the gossip or the drama that goes on in my office. I would gladly trade that for the solitude of my home office.

What about you? Have you thought about it? Would you miss the corporate office atmosphere, or would you easily make the transition? I have read about people giving up their dream of a home business because they found that it was too lonely.

They never stopped to consider the impact that working alone would have on their lives. They tried it, and didn't like it. That is okay I guess, but I would rather think about it before I take the plunge. Once you leave the corporate world, it may be hard to re-enter.

I am certainly not getting any younger, so once I make the decision to work from home, it had better stick. It is not something to be taken lightly. We should all be as confident as possible before we take that step to ensure that it is something we really want.

Otherwise, we may find ourselves trying to re-enter the work force after only a short time of starting a home business. It will not be impossible, but it probably won't be easy, either. Think about it long and hard before you leave your day job. Make sure that you are trading things that you can do without for things that will make you truly happy. Know from the beginning that you will not miss gathering around the water cooler for your daily dose of gossip.
