How to Back Up Your WordPress Blog By - Tom Canyon It goes without saying
that backing up your blog is extremely important. A back up of your
WordPress blog has two parts. They need to be backed up separately. * Blog Postings and
Comments (WordPress Database). The database contains your posts and certain
other data, but it does not include the items below. * Blog Theme and
Customized Files (WordPress Site). This consists of your WordPress core
installation (i.e. the WordPress software), WordPress plugins, WordPress themes
(which you may have customized), images and other files, server scripts (e.g.,
computer code such as Javascripts and PHP scripts) and additional files. Here are the steps to
take: 1. Before backing up your
WordPress files, it is a good idea to review and act on all comments to your
postings, such as accepting or deleting them. If you use the Akismet plug-in,
you should also delete comments captured by it. 2. Backup your Blog
Postings and Comments (WordPress Database). Log in to your WordPress blog with
administrator privileges. Click on the Manage tab, then click on the Export tab.
Clicking on the button will cause WordPress to create an XML file for you to
save to your computer. The XML file will be in a format that WordPress calls
WordPress eXtended RSS or WXR. It will contain your posts, static pages,
comments, custom fields, categories, and tags. Once you've saved the
download file, you can use the import function in WordPress to import this
information again. (You could even import it into another blog.) Alternatively, you can use
a blog backup service such as blogbackuponline.com, to make this type of backup
automatically. (More technical users may
prefer a more hands-on approach, by using the WordPress Database Backup plugin
or the phpMyAdmin server tool.) 3. Backup your Blog Theme
and Customized Files (WordPress Site). Use an FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
program such as WS_FTP or Filezilla to download a copy of the files in the
WordPress folder on your web host to your personal computer. This is probably
the folder where you installed WordPress when you set up your blog. 4. Make an extra backup
copy of the blog files that you downloaded to your personal computer. You could
copy the downloaded files onto a CD. Even easier, if you have an external hard
drive, you could copy your files to it. Large external hard drives are
inexpensive now, and give you additional protection in case the hard drive on
your personal computer or laptop fails. 5. Make a another backup
offsite. The easiest way to do this is to use an online backup solution such as
Carbonite.com or Mozy.com. For a low monthly fee, they will backup the contents
of your computer to a remote server automatically and continuously. 6. Test your backups to
make sure you can restore the data. Backing up your data is no use if you can't
restore it. Try to restore the data from time to time. Some users back up their
postings and comments more often than their blog theme and customized files.
This might make sense if you have a simple blog without much customization. Backing up your blog is
like insurance. You'll be glad you have it when you need it. ----------------------------------------------------------------- About The Author; Tom Canyon writes about
