Start an Event Planner Business

By - Lisa Paredes

Are you forever daydreaming about starting an event planner business? Well, there are many good reasons to pursue event planning as a work from home option. Event planning is all about planning and preparing for both big and small events. However, one would require having a solid foundation of the basics to host a successful event.

The Concept

Families, businesses, corporations who do not have the time to organize an event turn to an event planner for help. The planner with his resources and expertise handles every aspect of the event and makes it a grand success.

The concept of event planning is especially attractive for freelancers. The industry offers several niche areas that can be chosen according to convenience and interest. Social events that cover anniversaries and birthdays, and college reunion events are some special favorites.

An event planner is required to first determine the client's needs. Based on the needs, the planner would plan and create the event timelines and production schedules. He would also need to manage the operations team and coordinate all the aspects of the event. His job will finally end at monitoring and evaluating the event.

Start Up Cost

If you intend starting out as a team then first have an operating budget in place. You should have a certain amount of cash to back you up when you start whether with a team or individually. So while you can establish an event planning business with limited funds, it still remains important to have enough money to cover all expenses until your business starts generating profit.

The startup cost of an event planning business is close to nil. However, all those who wish to start an event planning business must ensure that they train hard to gain the required expertise. Competition in this field is high, so if you want to oversee major events, ensure that you have all the required skills.

Besides the above, you would also need to possess high energy and stamina. The job of an event planner is a tough one and often requires working in the evenings and on holidays. So get into this profession only if you have the ability to multi-task and work on tight schedules. Attention on detail, flexible work timings, creative and imaginative mindset and excellent communication skills are some other things that need to be in place in order to become a sought after event planner.

How To Market Your Event Planner Business

Once you have your business model in place comes time to market your services. Choose a name for your business and create business cards with the new name. Start by word of mouth advertising. Later move on to newspaper advertisements and the Yellow Pages.

Once you have developed a strong base, consider creating a website to market your services to a larger customer base.
