Marketing Tips

Register Your Domain

Once you have your website created,  you will need to register a domain name for your site. People  refer to it as a web address or name of the website, but in technical terms it's called a domain name. If you are not sure what a domain name is, it is the URL address to your website. An example would be the domain name we use for our site, which is "www.ahomebusinessopportunity.net".

Owning your own domain means that name belongs to you and you alone. To register is so cost effective, that it is virtually affordable to anyone. The cost will range between $10.00 to $20.00 per year, depending on which company you go with.

Before you actually go to register, think of a good name for your website. Think of a name that pertains to what it is you will be offering on your site. An example would be, if your website was about cars, a domain name of  "www.mycars.com" or "wwwjoescars.com" would be appropriate.  The idea is to come up with a name that would be relevant to your website.

Once you have decided on a name, you need to register that name at any of the Domain Register sites that are available. These sites make it really quite simple. They will have a search window that you simply type in the name you have chosen into a box and submit. Within a few seconds, they let you know if that particular name is being used by someone else. If it has, you can re-enter many different  variations to that name. With the internet growing every year, you now can use .net, .org, .info, .biz or .nu at the end of your name instead of .com.  Our advice is to first try using .com, then .net or .org since these are the most recognizable in today's internet.

Another alternative could be, try changing the domain name by adding a variation to the name itself. Lets say your website is about cooking and you want to use the name of "www.patsrecipes.com",  but find it is already taken. You can use www.recipesfrompat.com or www.patshomerecipes.com.   As you can see, you can use many different variations.

You can go to www.dotster.com or www.ooodomains.com for a good price on domain names, or you can go to our Domain links page for our complete list of other sites that you can register a domain name.

Web Host

After you have registered a domain name, you will need to find a web host.  There are many quality web host servers for you to choose from. Prices may range from $5 to $25 per month, depending on your needs and who you go with. The features that web host offer can be very different from one another, so you want to make sure that their features meet the demand of your business. Some of the features to look for before investing  are:

Technical Support; look for a host that offers 24/7 support with a quick response time to your questions and concerns.

Data Transfer Allowance; 30 to 40 megabytes of web space is average for a beginner.

Reliability: look for a web host that offers a guarantee of at least 99% uptime.

Site Management; easy access to your control panel to manage your email accounts, file transfers, traffic logs, etc.

POP Email Accounts;  the number of  email accounts your given.

Added Features/Software; do they allow for CGI scripts, autoresponders, form mail, etc.

Backup; how often they back up their server.

Flexibility For Growth; as your business grows, do they offer upscale packages for more bandwidth and features?

Find one with all the features that fit the demands of your business. One web host that you might want to check out, is Linksky. They offer a full range of features at an excellent price and technical support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We personally use them and are very happy with the service they provide.  For more detailed information on their services, you can go directly to their web site by going to Linksky. You can also go to our Web Host page if you want to check out our complete list of other quality web host.

Free Web Host

A Free Web Host server will host your site at no cost to you,  but there are significant drawbacks to using this type of service. One of the drawbacks of using a free web hosts is, they will place their own advertisement on your web page. When one of your visitors clicks on their link, it takes them off of your web page and on to theirs.

Another thing to be aware of is that your domain name address will also be followed by your free web host address, such as "www.yourname.membersxyzfreehostingcompany.com". Compare this to having your own domain name which would look like this; "www.yourname.com". Now which one do you think looks more professional? It is much easier to remember a web address with your own domain, rather than one from a free web host.  Also do not expect as many features as you would with a paid one.

If you research, you may find some free host that will work for you, but if you are serious about your business, pay for a quality host and you won't go wrong. To access a few links to these sites, go to our Free Web Host page.
