Marketing Tips

Meta Tags

Once you have your web site set up, your next step is; indexing your web pages with Meta Tags. A Meta Tag is a HTML code that is placed at the head of your web page. Keep in mind, these tags are not viewed by the browser, they are only used by search engines to determine where your site will rank in their indexes. Meta Tags can improve the ranking your website receives, but is not the only answer in getting a high ranking.

The heart of Meta Tags are Description and Keywords. A description is a short summery of your web page. A good explanation to this is what  people will see in the search results from the search engines.

Keywords are a list of phrases or words that pertain to your web page. These are the words that are used to get your site into search results. For example, if your web page is about cooking, you would use words as, cooking, food, recipes, etc.

Years ago, the advice was to use every variation of keywords that you can think of. With today's search engines, it is strongly recommended to limit the amount of keywords you use. You are better off using 3 to 7 of the best keywords that relate to your web page. Try not to repeat the same keyword if possible. The rule of thumb has been not to repeat any keyword more than three times for each page. Some search engines will frown on sites that use repeated keywords for hopes of a better ranking.

Using Meta Tags on your index page (home page) is very important, but it is also advised to put Meta Tags on all of your web pages. Just make sure to use description and keywords that coincide  with the page your working on. You should try to use the best variation of words or phases for each web page.

Since this topic can seem to get technical and we don't want to confuse you, we have a list of sites that will give you detailed information on Meta Tags and how to use them on our Meta Tags page. Plus in our Meta Tag Generator/Builder page,  we have a list of sites that will automatically generate meta tags for your web site.

Search Engines

After you have indexed your pages with keywords and description, it's time to submit your pages to search engines.

Search engines are used every day by millions of people to find information on a particular interest. We have all gone online to research a topic with one of the major search engines. This brings us to pages filled with links on that topic.

Your main objective should be getting listed with as many of the major search engines as you can. When you submit your website to these search engines, be sure to manually submit to each one.

Today some of your major search engines require a fee to list your site. Paying the fee does not guarantee what page of the search results you will be listed in, so optimizing your pages for search engines is crucial.

The key with search engines is to try and get placement results in the first or second page.  Search engines will look at your description and keywords (Meta Tags) as they relate to the content of your web site. This is why you want to use keywords that reflect the content of your pages as well as the description.

Besides the major search engines, there are many other search engines that you can submit your site to. When you submit to some of the smaller search engines,  there are a few websites that will automatically submit your site to several of them for free. My recommendation is, if you have the time, do it manually.

Since optimizing your pages covers a lot of information, we have a list of a few websites on our Resource page that will explain in detail about optimizing your web pages.

Search engines will definitely improve your client base, but remember don't rely on search engines alone to have a successful business.

To submit your website to search engines, go to our Search Engines and Directories page to access our complete list of search engines.

Pay Per Click Search Engines

Pay per click search engines work on the same basis as above with the exception that you bid for placement. How most of them work is you can bid on a keyword from $0.01 cent and up. Every time a visitor is taken to your web site,  you are charged the bid amount. The higher your bid, the higher you will be placed on their listing.

Most of these search engines require a minimum deposit of $10 to $50. What is nice about this is you are in control of how much you want to invest. When the money is depleted, you decide to continue or to stop.

To get a list of pay per click search engines, go to our Search Engines and Directories page.
